Housing Authority of Savannah
555 West Bay Street
Public Housing–The Housing Authority of Savannah provides Public Housing to low-income families, senior citizens and the disabled. There are eight apartment complexes (neighborhoods), some specifically designed for the needs of handicapped family members, located throughout the city. Interested parties must apply for public housing and there is usually a waiting list (approximately one year wait). There are two options available for the payment of rent: 1) Income-based (approx. 30% of gross income); and 2) Flat rent based on the market value of the apartment.
Section 8–The Section 8 program allows low-income families to receive federal housing assistance while enjoying homes outside traditional public housing. Participants pay approximately 30% of their adjusted income directly to the landlord. The Housing Authority subsidizes a portion of the rent based on fair market rent guidelines. Eligibility requirements are similar to those for public housing. There is a waiting list that opens periodically (approximately one year wait). When the waiting list re-opens an advertisement is placed in the local newspaper inviting those who believe they are eligible to apply. The Housing Authority administers housing assistance payments for over 2,400 privately owned homes and apartments.
